Professor of Economics since 2011, he earned his PhD in Economics in 2005 from UPF Barcelona. From 2013 to 2016, he served as Head of Department and Director of the PhD Program. He is the scientific coordinator of the GRINS – Growing Resilient, Inclusive and Sustainable project, funded by the NRRP, and President of the GRINS Foundation. His research covers political economy, economic demography, unified growth theory, democratization, and the theory and empirics of cultural values. He studies the origins and implications of economic and political institutions, as well as the role of human pathogen exposure in shaping social interactions and civil conflicts, using georeferenced disaggregated data. He has published in journals such as American Economic Review, Econometrica, Review of Economics and Statistics, AEJ Macroeconomics, Economic Journal, Journal of Economic Growth, Journal of Public Economics, among others. He has been principal investigator of projects funded by MUR, EIEF, and the University of Bologna, and a member of FIRB and ERC network projects. He is a Research Fellow at CEPR (London), IZA (Bonn), CESifo (Munich), and GLO.
